A.K. (Alyce K.) Williams turned 29 some years ago on September 1. She was born in Los Angeles, California, the locale that inspired the backdrop for The Only Thing Better Than Good Is New. Alyce firmly believes a woman who tells her age will tell anything.
Alyce loves an adventure and prides herself on being spontaneous. The summer and fall after her high school graduation she elected to party SEVERAL times a week as oppose to flying off to a four-year university. It was during this time that her best-best (best friend) affectionately dubbed her P.A., which was short for Party Animal. Alyce was quite content with her party-like-a-rock-star status, that is, until she received that fateful phone call. On a Tuesday night in January one of her dear friends called to tell Alyce that her nomadic boyfriend was all over some lascivious girl at the club. Alyce responded with a “Hmm…really?”
First thing the next morning (Wednesday) she called Virginia State University to inquire about whether or not she had been accepted and was she too late to attend the spring semester. The admission clerk condescendingly said, “You must be here by Saturday.”
Although she had never been to Virginia, she instantaneously responded, “No problem I’ll see you on Saturday.” Four years later Alyce Graduated with a B.S. in Psychology.
Fast-forward several years. L.A.’s housing market was through the roof. So true-to-form, sight-unseen, Alyce and her family decided to move to Charlotte, North Carolina. She arrived at 7:00am (redeye flight) and by 7:00pm Alyce had signed on the dotted line and had purchased a house. She had never been to Charlotte and the only person she knew was the same friend who several years earlier exposed her nomadic ex-boyfriend’s dance performance.
Two years later, one sunny summer afternoon, Alyce perused her almamater’s alumni social website, when suddenly a post on one of her schoolmate’s wall hit her like a lightening bolt. It read something like this: Hey dude you should write a book. You were always good at telling a story. She thought to herself: Hey, I’m good at telling a story. She immediately exited the website and began penning what was to be her debut novel. Less than eight weeks later the first draft of “The Only Thing Better Than Good Is New” was completed.
You will be pleased to know she is currently working on the sequel.
